Biodiesel Hoses as Fuel, Tank, or Fuel Tanker Hoses
Reichelt Chemietechnik is your specialized partner for rigid plastic hoses and tubing made of elastomers (rubber), providing solutions for both industrial applications and laboratory analytics. Our range includes hose solutions for transfer of:
Biodiesel hoses are fuel hoses designed specifically for transferring unleaded fuels, E10, and biodiesel. However, the maximum aromatic content in gasoline and diesel fuels must not exceed 50%, as this could compromise the chemical resistance of the hoses.
Our fuel hoses are used in the petroleum industry, automotive industry, and motorsport. They are also employed as dispensing hoses or tank hoses at gas stations and are suitable for transferring rapeseed oil, thanks to their chemical resistance to this medium.
Which Materials Are Suitable for Biodiesel?
Various polymers can be used for biodiesel and other fuel tubes, including soft elastomers and rigid plastics. The most common elastomers are FKM/FPM (fluoro rubber) and NBR (nitrile rubber). Hoses made from these elastomers are particularly soft and flexible, resistant to high temperatures, and pressure-resistant when reinforced with fabric or outer layers. Temperature Resistance: FPM ranges from -20 °C to +200 °C (briefly up to +250 °C), while NBR ranges from -30 °C to +110 °C, depending on the tube design.
The pressure resistance of biodiesel hoses also depends on various parameters and varies by hose type. As a guideline, it is worth noting that double-jacket hoses can withstand a maximum operating pressure of up to 290 psi at +68°F. For biodiesel hoses with textile reinforcements, this value increases to 1,088 psi, and for designs with steel wire braiding, it can reach up to 3,625 psi, depending on the specific hose dimensions.
Not only elastomers are suitable for transporting biodiesel – rigid plastics, such as fluoroplastics, also prove to be excellent materials for biodiesel hoses. A commonly used example is PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). PTFE is nearly universally resistant to chemicals, temperature-resistant in a range from -328°F to +500°F (temporarily up to +536°F), and mechanically stable or pressure-resistant. This makes the elastomer hose an ideal tanker hose.
In explosion-protected areas (Ex zones), such as gas stations or when used as dispensing or tanker hoses, antistatic products are essential. These electrically conductive hoses typically have a discharge resistance of <10⁶ ohms, ensuring safe operation.
