Pipe fittings made of plastic
- Pipe fittings made of plastic are used for adapting hard hoses.
- For fittings on hard hoses with outer diameters of 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm, they are referred to as hose fittings.
- For fittings/pipe fittings with an outer diameter of 12 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm, and 25 mm, the term pipe fittings applies.
Connection Principle
The principle of connection for fittings is that the hose/pipe snugly fits inside the fitting, and the connection is then sealed with a sealing ring. The sealing itself is achieved with a cutting ring made of PEEK (Polyether ether ketone), which acts on the hose/pipe via a tightened union nut. The slotted cutting ring notches into the hose/pipe as much as the union nut is tightened.
Material Properties/Specifications
Description of the plastics from which the pipe fittings are made.
- PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene/THOMAFLON)
is a fluoroplastic that exhibits extraordinary resistance to organic and inorganic media as well as temperatures; its coefficient of sliding friction is ideal, as well as its weather-resistant properties; PTFE is weatherproof. The material is characterized by very good dielectric properties and electrical insulation properties, even at high humidity; it is used in biotechnology, pharmacy, and food technology as well as in laboratory technology and chemical engineering. PTFE is used in precision engineering for the construction of valves, fittings, and pumps, but also in sealing technology for the production of piston rings and seal rings.
- PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy/Chemfluor®)
is a chemically highly resistant fluoroplastic at temperatures up to +280 °C, and as a fluoroplastic, PFA is resistant to nearly all organic and inorganic media; PFA's chemical resistance is comparable to that of PTFE. PFA is used in equipment manufacturing, especially in biotechnology, laboratory technology, and chemical process engineering; interestingly, the temperature range of the fluoroplastic PFA is between -200 °C and +260 °C, a range particularly significant for high-temperature chemistry.
- PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride/Kynar®/Solef®)
is distinguished by its great hardness. The fluoroplastic is abrasion-resistant and impact-resistant, even at low temperatures. Its hydrolysis resistance is outstanding. The material is known for the best electrical insulation properties and ensures the highest thermal stability; it is UV-resistant and weatherproof, and considered physiologically safe.
- PP (Polypropylene/Hostalen® PP)
is referred to in practice as a technical plastic, it is KTW-compliant and thus used in drinking water treatment, drinking water supply, and in container construction for food technology; PP is used for the production of pump segments/elements and rollers as well as in filter housing construction, it is characterized by very good temperature and chemical resistance, however, it is not suitable for low temperatures; the material meets the UL 94 HB fire class. Since it is suitable for food technology, it is considered food-safe and complies with the guidelines of the BfR and the FDA.
Chemical Resistance of the Plastics from which the fittings/pipe connectors are made:
- PP (Polypropylene/Hostalen® PP)
is resistant to lubricants, gasoline, aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones as well as aromatic hydrocarbons, organic acids, mineral acids, hydrogen peroxide, alkali solutions, ammonia, and amines.
- PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride, Kynar®, Solef®)
is a fluoroplastic that is resistant to gasoline and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated solvents, ammonia solutions, and aliphatic amines as well as aniline, mineral acids, organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, and UV radiation.
- PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy/Chemfluor®)
belongs to the group of fluoroplastics and is resistant to gasoline and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, xylene, and other aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, halogenated solvents, esters, ketones, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide as well as ammonia solutions and aliphatic amines, pyridine, mineral acids, organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, hot water, and UV radiation.
- PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride/Knyar®, Solef®)
presents itself as a fluoroplastic, its resistance to gasoline and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated solvents, ammonia solutions, and aliphatic amines as well as aniline, mineral acids, and organic acids, but also to hydrogen peroxide and hot water is given.
- POM (Polyoxymethylene/Delrin®)
is characterized by its resistance to lubricants, gasoline, and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, xylene, and other aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as esters, ketones, alkaline solutions, ammonia, and amines, or even hydrogen peroxide and hot water. There is low resistance to phenols, organic acids, and mineral acids.
