Safely Discharging Exhaust Gases

Whether in the chemical industry, laboratories, or process engineering: managing the discharge of exhaust gases is a task that needs to be addressed across many industrial sectors. Choosing the right exhaust hose or ventilation hose depends on the process conditions and is anything but trivial, as the gases to be discharged are often corrosive and hazardous to health. In addition to the necessary chemical resistance, suction and pressure hoses must also withstand high temperatures and be able to handle the resulting vacuum or overpressure.

As a specialist in plastic and hose technology, RCT Reichelt Chemietechnik offers a wide range of high-quality exhaust hoses made from various hose materials, ensuring that the right hose is available for every application. This includes industrial applications, as well as use in workshops or by technical testing service providers.

The Right Exhaust Hose for Your Application

Available Versions

Exhaust hoses are available on the market under many different names, such as ventilation, air, corrugated or spiral hoses. When gases are discharged under vacuum, they are called suction or vacuum hoses. When under pressure, they are known as pressure hoses. Particularly hot exhaust gases are carried away using hot air hoses, which are usually made of silicone. These tubes should not be confused with exhaust pipes, which are specifically tailored to vehicles and their exhaust systems, while an exhaust hose has more general applications in various fields where exhaust gases need to be discharged. An exhaust pipe is part of a vehicle's exhaust system and is used to channel exhaust gases away from the engine. The heat generated by exhaust gases from a car or motorcycle can be quite high, so selecting the appropriate material is essential.

Materials for Exhaust Hoses

The choice of suitable hose plastic should always take process conditions into account. What temperature and pressure will the item be exposed to? Are the gases to be discharged corrosive or chemically aggressive? What nominal diameter is required for optimal ventilation? Based on these conditions, the following materials can be selected:

Silicone Rubber Hoses

Our silicone rubber tubes are characterized by excellent temperature resistance and are thus ideal for use as hot air tubes. Exhaust and ventilation hoses made from this material are extremely flexible and suitable for continuous operation at temperatures up to +310 °C, without compromising mechanical strength. An integrated steel wire spiral ensures pressure resistance up to 2.5 bar or vacuum resistance up to 7 mWS at +20 °C, depending on the hose type.

Our hot air hoses made from silicone are manufactured from high-quality glass fiber fabric with a silicone coating and integrated spring spiral, optionally with an additional inner liner to ensure a smooth inner surface.

PVC Spiral Hoses

Spiral hoses made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are suitable for operating temperatures from -10 °C to +70 °C for both vacuum and pressure applications. They are available in various versions and are used to discharge neutral and mildly aggressive gases.

  • The "light," "ultralight," and "ultraflexible" hose types feature small bending radii and low weight. The integrated spiral, available in PVC-U (hard PVC) or steel wire, ensures the mechanical stability of these variants as well as vacuum resistance up to 350 mbar and pressure resistance up to 0.5 bar at +20 °C, depending on the hose type. Lightweight PVC industrial tubes are therefore ideal as flexible ventilation and exhaust hoses.
  • The "heavy" version and the reinforced suction and pressure hoses in "dark green" and "light green" types, also equipped with PVC-U or steel wire spirals, are more robust and can withstand operating pressures up to 7 bar or vacuums up to 900 mbar at +20 °C.

PTFE Exhaust Hose

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a fluorinated plastic known for its excellent chemical resistance. Only elemental fluorine and free alkali metals can attack this nearly universally resistant plastic. It also has a wide operating temperature range from -200 °C to +260 °C, and can withstand up to +280 °C for short periods. PTFE exhaust hoses are the preferred choice when it comes to discharging particularly aggressive gases.

Corrugated hoses made from PTFE are available in "translucent" and "black with smooth or cylindrical ends," as well as antistatic versions. The material is filled with 25% carbon powder, ensuring electrical conductivity. The discharge resistance is <106 ohms. PTFE exhaust tubes are considered almost universally applicable due to their properties.

Hoses Made from EPDM/PP

Hosing made from the polymer blend EPDM/PP (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber/polypropylene) are used to discharge hot air, smoke, and chemical vapors. They are also used for engine ventilation. The temperature range is -40 °C to +120 °C, with short-term resistance up to +150 °C. An embedded steel wire spiral ensures mechanical stability while maintaining small bending radii between 60 mm and 170 mm, depending on hose dimensions.

LDPE and PP Corrugated Hoses

The polyolefins LDPE (low-density polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene) are also available as corrugated hoses. Both polymers have good chemical resistance, particularly against acids, alkalis, and saline solutions. The temperature resistance ranges from -40 °C to +70 °C for LDPE and -40 °C to +100 °C for PP. They also have high electrical breakdown resistance from 75 to 90 kV/mm and meet the UL 94 HB flammability rating. In addition to being used as suction hoses, these polyolefin tubes are also employed to transport liquid media and free-flowing solids in moving or vibrating equipment.

PA 6 Hose Technolog

Polyamide 6 (polycaprolactam) is a partially crystalline, thermoplastic, and linear plastic that melts upon heating without decomposing. PA 6 has established itself not only as a fiber material but also as an engineering material for fasteners, semi-finished products, and pipes. Exhaust hoses made from this homopolymer are used for extracting organic and inorganic gases, as well as providing mechanical protection for cables. High abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, and impact strength are key features. The operating temperature range is from -40 °C to +120 °C. Corrugated tubes made from PA 6 meet the UL 94 HB flammability rating and have high electrical breakdown resistance from 20 to 80 kV/mm.

PVDF

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is, like PTFE, a polyhalogen olefin. This fluorinated plastic is indispensable as a hose material in chemical process engineering due to its good chemical resistance and temperature tolerance (-60 °C to +150 °C). In addition to standard hoses, flexible spiral and corrugated hoses are available. The latter are primarily used as exhaust hoses when highly corrosive and aggressive gases need to be discharged. They are also used for conveying liquid media.

PVDF corrugated hoses can be autoclaved at +121 °C and sterilized with ethylene oxide or hot air (+160 °C). They meet the UL 94 V-0 flammability rating, the IP68 protection standard, and have a high electrical breakdown resistance of 60 to 100 kV/mm.

PFA and MFA Hoses

PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) and MFA (modified fluoroalkoxy) are perfluorinated, thermoplastic plastics. They are almost universally chemically resistant and have an operating temperature range from -270 °C to +260 °C, depending on the specific type, making them highly temperature-resistant. Corrugated hoses made from these materials can be used at very high temperatures, such as for discharging very hot exhaust gases, as well as at very low temperatures, for example, for conveying liquid nitrogen. They remain mechanically stable and flexible.

MFA and PFA corrugated hoses are available in various versions, with options for smooth, cylindrical ends, and antistatic variants with a surface resistance of 105 ohms.

PUR Exhaust Hose

Polyurethane, a term that encompasses a variety of modern plastics with a common urethane group, is used in the construction industry as soft and hard foams. As filling and insulating materials, foamed polyurethanes have also found applications in mechanical engineering and, most notably, the automotive industry. In chemical process engineering, unfoamed PUR formulations are mainly used as semi-finished products and basematerials. These are characterized by high mechanical strength along with good flexibility.

PUR film hoses, equipped with steel wire spirals and optionally coated with TPE-U and FDA-compliant, are primarily used as ventilation and exhaust hoses. They have an operating temperature range from -40 °C to +100 °C, with short-term resistance up to +125 °C, and pressure resistance up to 3 bar and vacuum resistance up to 900 mbar. (Values vary depending on hose type and dimension)

Thicker-walled suction and pressure tubes, also equipped with embedded steel wire spirals, are suitable for transporting both gaseous and liquid media. They are highly abrasion-resistant, food-safe (EG 1935/2004, EU 10/2011 Categories A, B, C, D1, E, and LFGB), and can handle operating pressures up to 5 bar at +20 °C. The vacuum resistance for this version is also 900 mbar at +20 °C.

FEP Exhaust Hose

Fluoroethylenepropylene is free of plasticizers and physiologically safe. It is characterized by high chemical resistance and temperature tolerance (-260 °C to +200 °C). The mechanical stability of the corrugated hoses is remarkable despite their high flexibility. Additionally, they have high translucency, enabling visual monitoring of the flowing media.
