Film Hoses for Suction, Vacuum and Low-Pressure Applications
Many people are familiar with film hoses from older tumble dryers, where they vented warm, moist air. In technical applications, film hoses typically refer to lightweight corrugated hoses with thin walls.
Due to their very thin wall thickness (ranging from 0.4 to 1.4 mm), these hoses require internal reinforcement—usually a steel wire or rigid plastic helix—to maintain their shape. As a result, film hoses are not universally applicable but rather serve as specialised solutions for specific use cases. Common applications include:
Thanks to their construction, all film hoses offer high flexibility and excellent bendability. The film hoses offered by RCT are made entirely of PUR (polyurethane) and are translucent, allowing for visual monitoring of the media flow.
The Standard Model: PUR Film Hose
The standard configuration is the PUR film hose, designed for extracting gases, liquids, or free-flowing solids in chemical, laboratory and process engineering. Available in diameters from 50 mm to 300 mm, this suction hose is suitable for a wide range of applications.
A corrosion-resistant steel helix provides structural support and is fully encapsulated. The interior is smooth to reduce turbulence and prevent blockages during media transport. The PUR material is resistant from –40 °C to +90 °C. In addition to its transparency, the 0.4 mm PUR wall exhibits excellent resistance to mineral oils, UV radiation and ozone, making it suitable for outdoor or demanding environments. The hose is also vacuum-capable, tolerating underpressures of 30 to 200 mbar (at +20 °C), depending on size.
FDA-Compliant PUR Spiral Hose for Controlled Environments and Food Contact
Similar to the base model, this FDA-compliant spiral hose offers additional features for use in food processing and controlled environments. It complies with FDA 21 CFR §177.2600 and §178.2010, which regulate the use of elastomers and stabilising agents in repeated food contact.
With a wall thickness of 0.7 mm, this plastic hose is considered a medium-duty version in the range and offers increased hydrolysis and microbial resistance. It is available with internal diameters from 50 mm to 300 mm. After proper grounding of the steel helix, it also offers electrostatic discharge capability, qualifying it as an antistatic hose.
Heavy-Duty PUR Hose with TPU Coating for Demanding Environments
With a wall thickness of 1.4 mm, the heavy-duty PUR film hose with TPU coating is designed for tough industrial conditions. A thermoplastic polyurethane sheath protects the steel helix from corrosion. The increased material thickness significantly improves abrasion and wear resistance, vacuum stability, and adds a moderate level of stiffness.
This hose is ideal for suction and vacuum applications, tolerating vacuum levels between 400 and 900 mbar depending on size. It is available in diameters from 32 mm to 100 mm and, like all hoses in the range, is rated for use between –40 °C and +90 °C.
