Knurled Thumb Screws Made of Plastic as Fastening Elements

In industry, fastening elements are essential for creating secure connections between two components. Screws are available in numerous variants for different applications. Plastic knurled thumb screws are typically used for housing covers, equipment panels, adjustment points on laboratory devices, filter holders and similar applications. In the Reichelt Chemietechnik shop, you will primarily find models made of plastic. More precisely, our products are made from the materials PP (polypropylene, Hostalen®PP) and PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride, Kynar®, Solef®) in accordance with DIN 654, as well as PA (polyamide), specifically PA 6.6 (polyamide 6.6, nylon). All variants are slotted.

What Is a Knurled Thumb Screw?

Knurled thumb screws are a special type of screw featuring a knurled edge, which allows them to be adjusted by hand without tools. This means that screwdrivers or other tools are not required to fit or remove them. The knurling prevents fingers from slipping when tightening or loosening. These fasteners are mainly used wherever they need to be loosened or fastened frequently – for example on housing covers, equipment panels, adjustment points on laboratory devices and filter holders.

Applications and Properties for Knurled Screws

This type of fastener is used in design engineering and plant operations, where they serve as fastening elements in production environments. Plastic offers several practical advantages here. Compared with their steel counterparts, plastic knurled thumb screws are non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant and lighter. The standard colour is natural (close to white). Variants in black or white can be requested on enquiry.

PA

Knurled head screws made of PA 6.6, slotted, offer the highest mechanical strength and are therefore fatigue-resistant. The fastening elements are abrasion-resistant and show excellent elastic recovery. They are cold-resistant and at the same time offer high chemical resistance. These fasteners are resistant to mineral oils, fuels and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as to acids and bases. Polyamide 6.6 and polyamide 6 do not differ significantly in their properties or resistance characteristics for most applications.

Standard Screws Made of PP and PVDF

Knurled thumb screws in accordance with DIN 654, made of slotted PP, are classed as standard variants. They are rated for temperatures up to +100 °C and are weather- and UV-resistant, impact-resistant, highly rigid and extremely hard. Their elastic recovery is remarkable.

Knurled thumb screws in accordance with DIN 654, made of slotted PVDF, are intended for higher temperature ranges. The operating temperature range is rated from -40 °C to +150 °C, with short-term peaks of up to +160 °C also tolerable. The PVDF variants are used primarily in the pharmaceutical and food industries, in biotechnology and the related mechanical engineering applications, and also in the nuclear sector. Overall, these fasteners are characterised by their high chemical resistance to acids and bases, greases, alcohols and oils, as well as to halogens, oxidising acids, alkalis, pyridine, ketones and amines.
