Milk Tube Fitting Seals as Pipe Seals
The so-called milk tube fitting was originally developed to connect milk tubes and milk hoses. However, it is now used in the entire food industry, as well as in the pharmaceutical and chemical technology. As a specialized laboratory supplier, Reichelt Chemietechnik offers an extensive selection of seals for these fittings. The so-called milk tube fitting seals are available in different materials. Specifically, milk tube seals are available in EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber), silicone (THOMASIL), NBR (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, Perbunan®), FKM (fluoro rubber, THOMAFLUOR), and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene, THOMAFLON).
Pipe seals in various materials: Properties and Applications
EPDM
EPDM milk tube fitting seals are suitable for use with hot goods, milk, steam, and hot water. The EPDM seals are food-safe, i.e., FDA and BfR compliant, and thus comply with the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia, and depending on the design, with DIN 11851. The Shore A hardness of the milk tube seals is 80° according to DIN 53505, with the working temperature or temperature range considered as -50 °C to +150 °C as a permanent temperature. The elongation at break is 258%, and the compression set is 12% at +70°C/22 h.
NBR
NBR sealing rings for milk tube fittings are resistant to fats, mineral oils, and waxes, but not resistant to nitric acid, formic acid, or oxidizing media. The NBR rings for milk tube fittings are also food-safe, meeting the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia. They are blue in color and have a Shore A hardness of 80° according to DIN 53505, with a working temperature or optimal temperature range between -30 °C and +100 °C. Variants that conform to DIN 11851 are also available.
The elongation at break for milk tube fitting seals is 346% according to DIN 53505, and the compression set is 30% at 100°C/22 h. The preferred areas of application for these seals are in the dairy industry, the food industry, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Silicone
Silicone milk tube fitting seals are food-safe. They meet the food-grade requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia and are FDA-compliant and BfR-compliant.
The Shore A hardness is 70° according to DIN 53505. The working temperature ranges from -60 °C to +200 °C. The elongation at break is 257% according to DIN 53504, and the compression set is 29% at +175 °C/22 h.
FKM/FKM
FKM milk tube fitting seals comply with the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia due to their food safety and are preferably used in drinking water supply and drinking water treatment. They are DVGW and KTW compliant.
The sealing rings made of FKM are exceptionally chemically resistant to hydrocarbons, mineral, vegetable, and animal oils, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, many acids and alkalis, and oxidizing agents. However, they are not resistant to polar solvents. FKM has a Shore A hardness of 70° according to DIN 53505. The working temperature is specified as -20 °C to +200 °C. These milk tube seals are considered high-performance seals. They find their application in the dairy industry, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology, where biochemical process technology is a frequent and precise application.
PTFE
PTFE seals for milk tubes are food-safe and comply with the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia. The chemical resistance of these milk tube fitting seals is universal. They are resistant to hydrocarbons, mineral, vegetable, and animal oils, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, almost all acids and alkalis, alkalis, and ozone. The sealing rings also demonstrate very good heat resistance and cold resistance, weather resistance, and ozone resistance. The Shore D hardness is 56° according to DIN 53505. The working temperature or temperature resistance ranges from -200 °C to +260 °C. These are high-temperature seals. The elongation at break is 400%.
