FPM/FKM tubes and Viton® tubing for laboratory, pump, chemical, gas and pressure applications

Viton® tubes – also referred to as FPM or FKM tubing – are fluororubber products used as laboratory tubing, pump tubing, chemical tubing, gas lines and pressure hoses. They are chosen wherever demanding chemical conditions call for a soft, flexible line. This makes FPM a strong candidate for pump tubing: it combines high mechanical strength with remarkable dimensional stability and withstands most organic and inorganic media. The maximum continuous operating temperature of Viton® is +200 °C, with short-term exposure up to +250 °C. Owing to its low permeability, FPM tubing is virtually gas tight. Shore hardness depends on the type and ranges from A 55° to A 75°.

As soft rubber tubing, FPM is used mainly in laboratory technology, biotechnology and chemical engineering. In process and chemical engineering, there is strong demand for versions with a pressure carrier – either a reinforcing insert or a steel wire braid – which allows the lines to handle higher pressures at elevated temperatures. Thanks to the material's specification, these products resist hydrocarbons, mineral, vegetable and animal oils, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, as well as many acids, alkalis and oxidising agents.

FPM/FKM pump tubing and further applications

FPM/FKM is widely used for pump tubing. Reichelt Chemietechnik (RCT) supplies FPM/FKM pump tubes in Shore hardnesses A 55°, A 60° and A 62° in accordance with DIN 53505. These peristaltic pump tubes made of FPM/FKM/Viton® (THOMAFLUOR) are extremely soft, which makes them a natural fit for peristaltic pumps. Their smooth surface keeps abrasion to a minimum, and they offer very high mechanical strength.

Fluororubber and fluoroelastomer tubing – better known as Viton® tubing – stands out for its exceptional chemical resistance. It withstands hydrocarbons, vegetable, mineral and animal oils, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, and also oxidising agents, acids and alkalis.

RCT also supplies FPM/FKM tubing as micro tubes and micro multi-lumen tubes. The micro tubes are available with inside diameters of 0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm and 1.8 mm. The FPM/FKM micro multi-lumen tubes, known as spaghetti tubing, come with 2 or 4 lumens and inside diameters of 1.5 mm and 2.2 mm. A separate group comprises FPM micro-spaghetti tubing for analytical technology, which is available in inside diameters of 0.51 mm, 0.64 mm, 0.76 mm, 0.89 mm, 1.02 mm, 1.14 mm and 1.30 mm. For peristaltic pumps, FPM/FKM pump tubes with 2 or 3 stoppers are available, each colour-coded.

FPM/FKM pressure hoses

These FPM pressure hoses combine very high mechanical strength with a smooth inner surface and an outer steel wire braid. The braided Viton® hose has a Shore A hardness of 75° in accordance with DIN 53505 and a temperature range of -25 °C to +180 °C. As the braided Viton® line is virtually gas-tight, with minimal permeability, it is also used as a gas hose. All the FPM/FKM chemical, laboratory and rubber tubes described above share this low gas permeability and are therefore also used – and referred to – as gas lines. This makes them a sound choice as gas hoses for conveying aggressive gases or nitrogen oxides.

FPM chemical hoses with glass fabric braiding

FPM/FKM chemical hoses with glass fabric braiding are a speciality in the RCT range. The glass-fabric-braided hose has a Shore A hardness of 70° in accordance with DIN 53505, is virtually gas-tight and can be operated from -20 °C to +200 °C, with short-term exposure up to +300 °C. This FPM chemical hose is pressure-resistant and complies with flammability class UL 94 V-0.

FPM/FKM pump tubes are likewise available with two or three stoppers, which ensure that the tubes can be clamped securely into peristaltic and cassette pump heads. For industrial use, FPM hoses are also supplied with a steel wire braid, which allows the line to be operated at up to 8 bar at +20 °C.

Order the right FPM tube from Reichelt Chemietechnik

RCT keeps its entire range of FPM tubes – fluororubber and fluoroelastomer products alike – permanently in stock, so short delivery times are assured. Most products in the range are highly flexible (High Flexible) and can therefore be inserted directly into peristaltic pumps. If you have any questions, please give us a call – our technology specialists will be glad to advise you.
