General Information

Foam rubber has a mixed cell structure with mostly open cells and a dense outer skin. It is used in many ways as a sealing material in the form of round cords, square profiles, plates or moldings.

Since open-celled, these materials can therefore absorb liquids.

The surface of sponge rubber profiles and seals is better protected from external influences than with cellular rubber due to the dense, robust and elastic outer skin.

However, if the surface is damaged, then the foam rubber seal with the open-cell structure, through the capillary action with aqueous medium can soak.

Foam rubber and cellular rubber are made from the same raw materials, often EPDM, CR, NR, NBR or SBR. Due to different manufacturing processes, however, the material structure of sponge rubber and cellular rubber differs fundamentally.
