Lumen Tubing

As a specialist in plastics and hose technology with more than 40 years of market experience, Reichelt Chemietechnik presents a well-assorted range of various plastic hoses as well as rubber hoses. Part of the range also includes numerous special hoses for specific applications, such as lumen tubing.

Lumen tubing refers to tubes that combine multiple channels or lumens within a single tube. They are therefore also referred to as multi-channel tubing, multilumen tubing, or multiple-lumen tubing. Depending on requirements and application areas, various materials, designs, and color codings can be selected. The number of lumens also varies: depending on the design, two, three, or four lumens are integrated.

The materials and designs available are described in more detail below.

Multi-Channel Micro Spaghetti Chemical Tubing

The micro multi-channel tubes are manufactured from FPM or FKM (fluoroelastomer, Viton®) and are available in two designs: with two lumens (inner diameter: 2.2 mm, outer diameter: 3.75 mm) and with four lumens (inner diameter: 1.5 mm, outer diameter: 2.5 mm). They are used in analytics, medical technology, biotechnology, as well as laboratory applications. Their chemical resistance is exceptionally good, particularly against hydrocarbons, vegetable, mineral, and animal oils, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, as well as many acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents. The temperature resistance is also exceptional for a soft elastomer tube: they can be thermally loaded in the range from -20 °C to +200 °C (short-term up to +250 °C). The elasticity and softness are reflected in a Shore hardness A of 64° in accordance with DIN 53505.

Multilumen Catheter Tubing

Multilumen tubes made of LDPE (low-density polyethylene) are offered as multilumen catheter tubing with either two or three lumens. They are transparent and, for a polyolefin, exceptionally soft and flexible. Also noteworthy are the anti-adhesive surface (smooth inner wall), high abrasion resistance, and good impact resistance, even at low temperatures. They are physiologically harmless, non-toxic, and completely taste-neutral and odor-neutral.

PUR Lumen Tubing

Lumen tubing or multilumen variants made of PUR (polyurethane) are produced and supplied in various designs. All share a Shore hardness A of 98° (DIN 53505) as well as exceptionally good flexibility and elasticity, even at low temperatures down to –40 °C. They are chemically resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons, gasoline, cyclohexane, diesel oil, isooctane, and kerosene, and are also UV-resistant as well as resistant to aging, weathering, and ozone. Despite their good elasticity, the multilumen variants with two, three, and four lumens are kink-resistant and tear-resistant. Their mechanical strength is also excellent.

PUR lumen chemical tubing with 2 lumens, calibrated, is used in process chemistry as well as in laboratory technology. These consist of two tubes welded together to form a twin tube. The PUR lumen tubing with 2 lumens demonstrates maximum elasticity and above-average flexibility across the entire temperature range from –35 °C to +60 °C (short-term +80 °C). They are colored black and blue.

PUR multi-channel tubing with 3 lumens, also calibrated, is highly elastic and highly flexible across the entire operating temperature range from -40 °C to +80 °C (short-term +120 °C). Kink resistance and high mechanical strength are guaranteed. The three channels are color-coded blue, black, and natural.

Multilumen tubing made of polyurethane with 4 lumens, calibrated, is process tubing for pilot-scale applications as well as for laboratory and analytical technology. The four channels are color-coded blue, black, natural, and green. Despite the multilumen design, it remains flexible and highly elastic. Thermally, it can be loaded from -40 °C to +80 °C, with temperature peaks up to +120 °C also permissible.

Silicone Lumen Tubing

Lumen tubing made of silicone is suitable for maximum temperature loads up to +200 °C. Silicone multilumen or multi-channel tubing consists of tubes made of super-elastic silicone rubber. The multilumen tubing is free from any extractable components and is odorless and taste-neutral. Silicone tubing is autoclavable at +136 °C, hot-air sterilizable up to +250 °C, and steam-sterilizable at +136 °C.

Silicone lumen chemical tubing, multilumen, is classified as multi-channel tubing manufactured from highly elastic silicone rubber and is free from extractable components. Only particularly high-quality silicone elastomer is used for extrusion. The operating temperature range is specified as -55 °C to +200 °C (short-term +250 °C), with a Shore hardness A of 60° in accordance with DIN 53505. Despite their high elasticity, the tubing exhibits high tensile strength of 10.4 MPa (DIN 53504) and an elongation at break of 300 % (DIN 53504).

The two-lumen silicone tubing also exhibits very good elastic properties and is likewise physiologically harmless, biocompatible, and free from extractable components. Due to the special silicone rubber compound, the lumen tubing with two lumens can even be used from -55 °C to +300 °C (short-term up to +350 °C); they are also ozone-resistant, weather-resistant, and resistant to aging. The Shore hardness A is 70° in accordance with DIN 53505.

PA Multilumen Tubing

Lumen tubing made of PA 12 (polyamide 12, soft) is available in both double-lumen (blue and black) and triple-lumen (blue, black, and natural) versions. They are characterized by good temperature resistance (-50 °C to +120 °C, short-term +150 °C), excellent mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, as well as good impact resistance. Due to its low gas permeability, polyamide is particularly suitable for conveying gases. The material is also physiologically harmless and sterilizable, both with steam at +136 °C and with ethylene oxide and gamma radiation.
