Let\u2019s look at the history, structure, properties and many applications of the fluoroelastomer FKM\/FPM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Birth_of_Fluoroelastomers\"><\/span>The Birth of Fluoroelastomers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fluorinated plastics rose to their present importance largely through the development of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in the late 1930s. As a thermoplastic, it disappoints above all in its mechanical properties \u2013 not least its lack of elasticity. This low flexibility means that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\/tubes-hoses\">chemical tubing<\/a>, for example, cannot bend into tight curves. The shortcomings of PTFE show far more clearly under mechanical load, since the material starts to flow even at low pressure. Its use in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\/seals-and-gaskets\">seals<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 whether\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\/semi-finished-products\/round-cords\">round cord<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\/seals-and-gaskets\/o-rings\">O-rings<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\/seals-and-gaskets\/flat-gaskets\">flat gaskets<\/a> \u2013 therefore remains fairly limited. Fluoroelastomers FKM were meant to remedy these deficits.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Twenty years after the discovery of PTFE, DuPont caused another sensation in polymer synthesis with Viton\u00ae, the first fluoroelastomer of its kind.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Question_of_Naming\"><\/span>A Question of Naming<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Standardised short codes bring order to the abbreviations used for plastics across industry, trade and regulatory bodies. The history of these\u00a0rubbers shows what happens when two separate institutions take on this task. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/\">ASTM International<\/a> (the American Society for Testing and Materials) classified fluoroelastomer as \u201cFKM\u201d under its ASTM D1418 standard. This standard names rubbers by the chemical make-up of their polymer chain. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.din.de\/de\">DIN\/ISO (the German Institute for Standardisation and the International Organization for Standardization)<\/a> initially spoke of \u201cFPM\u201d before adopting the American convention. Others appear under the trade names DAI-EL\u00ae (Daikin Industries Ltd.), Tecnoflon\u00ae (Solvay S.A.), Dyneon\u00ae (3M) and THOMAFLUOR (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\">Reichelt Chemietechnik<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Structural_Diversity\"><\/span>Structural Diversity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fluoroelastomers are copolymers, which means they form from more than one type of monomer. Vinylidene fluoride provides the basis in every case. Different cross-linking systems \u2013 diamine, bisphenol and peroxide \u2013 add almost limitless variation in composition. This lets manufacturers fine-tune the FKM material to each field of application.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Properties_of_FKM_Rubber\"><\/span>Properties of FKM Rubber<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fluoroelastomers FKM\u00a0 compounds may lack a single fixed composition, yet they share two defining traits: remarkable chemical stability paired with high thermal resistance. The reason lies in the exceptional strength of the carbon-fluorine bond compared with the carbon-hydrogen bond. Not surprisingly, then, thermal and chemical resistance rise as fluorine content increases. Standard grades handle continuous temperatures of 200 \u00b0C (392 \u00b0F) with ease and survive brief peaks of up to 230 \u00b0C (446 \u00b0F) without damage. At the cold end, average fluoroelastomers stay stable only down to roughly -20 \u00b0C (-4 \u00b0F). Special low-temperature FKM grades, however, can perform down to -35 \u00b0C (-31 \u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/en\/seals-and-gaskets\/flat-gaskets\/30652\/high-performance-fpm-flat-seals\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-722 size-full\" title=\"FPM flat gaskets \u2013 high-performance FPM flat seals\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/magazin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FPM-Flachdichtungen.jpg\" alt=\"FPM flat gaskets \u2013 high-performance FPM flat seals\" width=\"600\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/magazin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FPM-Flachdichtungen.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.rct-online.de\/magazin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/FPM-Flachdichtungen-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The chemical inertness of this non-flammable FKM material shows in its resistance to weathering and ozone, and in its tolerance of non-polar solvents such as aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Fuels, mineral oils and greases pose no problem, and neither do concentrated inorganic acids like hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acid. Ketones such as acetone, however, are off-limits \u2013 as are other polar solvents, glycol-ether-based brake fluids, caustic soda and acetic acid.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hot water, steam, amines and alcohols also call for caution. Conventional grades cannot tolerate these media, though compatible variants exist.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Versatile_Applications_of_FKM_Material\"><\/span>Versatile Applications of FKM Material<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">FKM rubber first found use as sealing material in aerospace, and the sector can no longer do without it. They suit jobs that also demand long service life and flexibility.
