Plastic threaded barb connectors as hose connectors

As a specialist in hose systems and fluid technology, Reichelt Chemietechnik offers an extensive assortment of threaded barb connectors made of metal and plastic. The latter are optionally equipped with either an external or internal thread on one side. Therefore, screw-in or screw-on connections are available, which primarily consist of plastics. The materials available from us include:

  • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
  • PA (Polyamide)
  • POM (Polyoxymethylene, Delrin®)
  • PP (Polypropylene, Hostalen®PP)
  • PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride, Kynar®, Solef®)
  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, THOMAFLON)

Chemical resistance of threaded barb connectors made of plastics

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

There is resistance when used with lubricants, greases, oils, gasoline, as well as aliphatic hydrocarbons, and against alcohol, esters, ketones, organic acids, mineral acids, hot water, as well as against alkali solutions, ammonia, and amines.

PA 6 (Polyamide 6)

is resistant to lubricants and gasoline, fats and oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons, cyclic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as halogenated solvents. The plastic is conditionally resistant and can be used with weak organic acids, ammonia, and amines.

POM (Polyoxymethylene/Delrin®)

is resistant to lubricants, gasoline, and other aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, xylene, and other aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as when used with esters, ketones, alkali solutions, ammonia, and amines; furthermore, against hydrogen peroxide and hot water.

PP (Polypropylene/Hostalen ®PP)

is resistant to lubricants, gasoline, aliphatic hydrocarbons, organic acids, mineral acids, as well as when used with hydrogen peroxide, alkali solutions, ammonia, and amines.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene/THOMAFLON)

is generally resistant to almost all organic and inorganic media except for fluorine and free alkali metals as well as against high-energy radioactive radiation; the resistance of PTFE is given against lubricants, gasoline, aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, xylene, and other aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, halogenated solvents, free halogens, esters, ketones, alkali solutions, ammonia, and amines as well as organic acids and mineral acids, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and other oxidizing agents, but also when used in hot water, steam, and UV radiation.

Operating temperatures/temperature ranges of plastics from which coupling caps are produced:

  • POM (Polyoxymethylene/Delrin®) -50 °C to +100 °C, temporarily up to +140 °C
  • PA 6 (Polyamide 6) -40 °C to +90 °C, temporarily up to +160 °C
  • PP (Polypropylene/Hostalen ®PP) -0 °C to +110 °C
  • PSU (Polysulfone) -100 °C to +170 °C, temporarily up to +200 °C
  • PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride/Kynar®, Solef®) -30 °C to +150 °C, temporarily +160 °C
  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene/THOMAFLON) -200 °C to +260 °C

Mechanical properties of hose spouts – various plastics in focus

HDPE

threaded barb spouts made of HDPE, i.e., High-Density Polyethylene, impress with excellent mechanical properties and extremely good impact resistance. They also prove their excellent chemical resistance, a Shore hardness D of 67° according to DIN 53505, and an operating temperature that lies between -30 °C and +80 °C, where even temporarily +100 °C can be applied. The straight hose spouts are optionally equipped with threads R 1/4", R 1/2", and R 1".

PP

threaded barb connectors made of the plastic PP, optionally equipped with external or internal threads, are characterized by extremely good impact and notch toughness as well as by the best chemical resistance to alcohols, ketones, as well as concentrated acids and alkalis. These hose connectors are hydrolysis-resistant as well as physiologically safe and autoclavable. They are equipped with a Shore hardness D of 72° according to DIN 53505 and are provided for operating pressures of 10 bar at +20 °C. Their operating temperature can be stated as +5 °C to +90 °C. Spouts for hoses with external threads of G 1/8", G 1/4", G 3/8", G 1/2", G 3/4", and G 1" are available.

External threads for mini-hose spouts

  • UNF 10-3/4" short
  • UNF 10-3/32" long
  • UNF 1/4"-28
  • NPT 1/8"
  • M 6 x 1

External threads for mini-angle threaded barb connectors

  • UNF 10-32 - short
  • UNF 10-32 - long
  • NPT 1/8"

There are also angle spouts with internal threads made of PP-Macro.

External threads for mini-T-hose spouts

UNF 10-28 - short

UNF 10-32 - long

NPT 1/8"

Threads for straight spouts

Straight threaded barb connectors are available with internal or external threads depending on the design. Both variants are available in the materials PP, PVDF, and PTFE.

PVDF

threaded barb connectors or hose olive spouts made of PVDF, optionally with internal and external threads, are characterized by their resistance to alcohols, fats, halogens, oils, acids, and alkalis. The hose connectors are valued as fluoroplastic connectors in the chemical industry, in chemical apparatus construction, in mechanical engineering, in petrochemistry, in the pharmaceutical industry, and in food chemistry. The operating temperature is defined as -40 °C to +140 °C. Hose spouts made of PVDF are FDA and BfR compliant and approved according to USP Class VI and the guidelines of the European Pharmacopoeia. The hose connectors also meet the guidelines of the KTW. Moreover, they are safely autoclavable at +134 °C, as well as gamma-ray sterilizable.

  • The assortment of hose olive spouts made of PVDF includes:
  • Micro-hose spouts with external thread UNF 10-32 and M 6 x 1
  • Mini-hose spouts with external thread UNF 1/4"-28 TPI and NPT 1/8"

  • Mini-T-spouts with external thread UNF 32 and NPT 1/8"
  • Straight hose connector spouts with thread made of PVDF
  • Straight hose spouts with external thread made of PP, PVDF, and PTFE as well as with internal thread made of PP, PVDF, and PTFE

PTFE

Connection elements made of the plastic PTFE are preferred as fluoroplastic for the chemical industry, chemical apparatus construction, as well as for mechanical engineering, but also specifically for petrochemical and pharmaceutical applications. This also includes the food industry and nuclear technology to a large extent. PTFE hose connectors are steam sterilizable and approved according to FDA, BfR, and USP Class VI as well as according to KTW. Their chemical resistance is outstanding and given when used with most inorganic and organic media. The operating temperature is -20 °C to +150 °C, whereas the Shore hardness D of the threaded barb connectors made of PTFE is 60° according to DIN 53505.

The assortment of connection elements made of the material PTFE includes straight and angle spouts with external and internal threads.

PA 6.6

Spouts for hoses made of PA 6.6 as hose spouts with screw-in or screw-on threads are set for operating temperatures of -40 °C to +115 °C and are physiologically safe, UV-resistant as well as chemically resistant to fats, oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, and solvents.

The assortment of these hose connectors includes:
